Why Are You Staying – I had a person quit recently and, of course, my first question was, “Why are you leaving?” It’s a reasonable question, but when you get the answer, you have already lost the person. A better question might be to ask the people who are still there, “Why are you staying? Why do you want to continue to work here?” You can do a mental checklist of your people, but why not ask them directly? This will work great if they don’t know that question in advance. Some might say they enjoy the work and the people, some might not have an answer. For those people, you need to work on giving them a reason to stay if you want to keep them.
