A Sense of Where It Is – Have you ever seen someone with a messy desk or office with piles of papers all over the place? Me too, I see it every day at my home and office. I have tried various methods to “declutter” but the same thing always happens. As soon as I declutter, I can’t find anything! I’m a chess player and as other chess players know, if you are playing a game and someone moves a piece while you aren’t looking you can immediately tell that something is wrong. It’s not because you know where all the pieces were, but it’s because you knew where they were in relation to the other pieces. Have you ever had someone tell you that you could find a certain document in the second pile of papers about halfway down? These are people who remember things spatially (in reference to other things) instead of sequentially (like in a file). Senator and basketball star Bill Bradley once said that he didn’t always need to look at the basket before shooting because you develop a "sense of where you are.” Similarly, spatial people develop a “sense of where it is.” So if you are a person who has an easier time finding something in a pile than in a file, stop worrying about how untidy your desk or office looks. Work instead on making sure you have enough room for your piles. And when someone unenlightened person comments about your mess you can say, “I see, you must not be a spatial thinking person.”
